The Internet Movie Database permits its users to rate films on a scale of 1 (Awful) to 10 (Excellent) and maintains a list of the Top 250 films. The top five films on the IMDB are The Godfather, rated 9.1 by 267,745 voters, followed by The Shawshank Redemption
(9.1/316,650), The Godfather: Part II (9.0, 153,356), The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (8.9, 87,604), and Pulp Fiction (8.8, 271,778). Click Here To Watch DVD Quality Movies & Music

Personally, I agree with the #1 ranking of The Godfather as I feel it is the best American movie ever made. (Whether I would rank it as high when considering art films and foreign films rather than movies in general, is another question.) I cannot argue with the #3 ranking of The Godfather: Part II either, as -- though I find it a more interesting film, narratively, though not as perfect as a movie than the original -- it essentially is part of the same film (in a way the ersatz The Godfather: Part III, which boasts an inflated 7.5 rating, is not.)

The Shawshank Redemption is a helluva movie, well-made and likely to be considered a classic in the future, but I would not rank it as high as does IMDB voters. However, I won't quibble with its high ranking as it is a first rate piece of commercial film-making. I love The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and watch it probably once a year, but I would not rate it in my top five films, and not even in my top 50, though it would rank it as one of my all-time favorite Westerns. I have given it a 10 on the IMDB, and obviously, the bulk of 87,603 other IMDB voters have rated it as highly, giving it its lofty position in the IMDB top 250.

I would consider Pulp Fiction to be one of the more overrated films in the IMDB rankings, but it is a terrific film that wears well with subsequent viewings, so I cannot claim it as being among the most overrated. Ditto Goodfellas (8.8, 148,188), which is ranked #15 on the IMDB. I find that Goodfellas is not even the best Martin Scorsese film, let alone deserving of being ranked in the Top 15 motion pictures of all time. Scorsese's Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, or his under-appreciated masterpiece Casino is more deserving of that honor.
